The project involved a contemporary extension and refurbishment of the original Customs House in Middlesbrough. In the theatre space an acoustic movable wall was required, but critically it required a 1200 mm wide full height pass door. Due to the height and weight of this panel, and the poor quality aged handmade bricks, we incorporated a purpose designed column that extended from new floor slab to slab, which removed the load from the wall.
